Neodymium Iron Boron Magnets - Magnetic Field Direction 2023-11-25 18:08:00

Neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnets are permanent magnets made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron. They are the strongest type of permanent magnet available commercially. The neodymium atom can have a large magnetic dipole moment because it has 4 unpaired electrons in its electron structure as opposed to (on average) 3 in iron. In a magnet, it is the unpaired electrons, aligned so that their spin is in the same direction, which generate the magnetic field.

NdFeB magnets are anisotropic and can only be magnetized along the magnetization direction. The magnetization direction is the direction of the magnetic field inside the magnet. NdFeB magnets can be magnetized axially, diametrically, or radially. During hot deformation, the c-axis of Nd2Fe14B crystals is gradually oriented to be parallel to the compression direction.

In summary, NdFeB magnets have a preferred magnetic direction, and they can be magnetized axially, diametrically, or radially. The magnetization direction is the direction of the magnetic field inside the magnet. NdFeB magnets are widely used in various fields such as electronics, electrical appliances, motors, medical equipment, and more.
